New home electricity in the Outaouais region: 6 electrical decisions to make before drywall installation

A forgotten outlet, an unplanned circuit: details that seem minor during construction, but can generate thousands of dollars in corrective work once the drywall is installed.

Here are six decisions to consider from the earliest stages of construction.

Electrical input: ensure sufficient capacity

A 200-amp service is the current standard for homes. However, homeowners planning to install a charging station, hot tub, generator, or garage workshop would benefit from considering a 400-amp service. Making this decision now can prevent costly future work.

The number of sockets: beyond the minimum required

Underestimating the number of electrical outlets needed remains one of the most common mistakes in new construction. It’s best to plan for more outlets than the minimum required, especially in the kitchen, garage, and outdoor areas.

Pre-wiring for generator

In the Outaouais region, power outages occur regularly, especially during winter storms. Installing a transfer switch during construction greatly facilitates the future addition of a generator. Performing this work after the walls are closed is considerably more complex and expensive.

The charging station circuit

The electrification of transportation is progressing rapidly. Running a 240V circuit to the garage during construction is a minor intervention. Adding the same circuit to an existing house requires significantly more work.

Wiring for home automation

Smart home systems are gaining popularity: connected thermostats, automated lighting, integrated security systems. Some of these systems require specific wiring that must be planned from the initial electrical design stage.

The location of the electrical panel

The electrical panel should be installed in an accessible location, protected from moisture. Preferred locations include the entryway, garage, or basement. Proper planning also allows for the necessary space to be allocated for future circuit additions.

Voltmax regularly works with homeowners building new homes throughout the Outaouais region. An initial meeting at the start of the project allows them to develop an electrical plan that takes into account all their immediate and future needs.
