FAQ GENERATORS
Why install a residential generator in the Outaouais region?
The Outaouais region is one of the areas of Quebec most affected by power outages, especially in rural areas like La Pêche, Chelsea, Val-des-Monts, and Wakefield. Ice storms, high winds, and fallen trees on power lines cause outages that can last from a few hours to several days. An automatic generator keeps your heating running in the dead of winter, keeps your food cold, powers your water pump (if you have a well), and keeps your security system active. For homeowners in rural Outaouais, it’s a necessity, not a luxury.
How much does it cost to buy and install a Generac generator for a house?
For a 10 to 14 kW generator (essential circuits: heating, refrigerator, lighting, water pump), the total cost, including purchase and installation, ranges from $8,000 to $14,000. For an 18 to 24 kW model capable of powering the entire house, expect to pay between $14,000 and $22,000. These prices include the generator, automatic transfer switch, installation base, electrical panel connection, and commissioning. Additional costs may include a propane tank, site grading, and electrical panel expansion if needed. VoltMax offers a free in-home assessment to determine your power requirements and provide you with an exact quote.
How does a Generac automatic generator work?
The system consists of two components: the generator (installed outdoors) and an automatic transfer switch (installed near your electrical panel). The switch continuously monitors the Hydro-Québec power supply. When an outage is detected, the generator starts automatically within seconds and powers your home. As soon as the power is restored, the system switches back to the grid and the generator shuts down. Generac generators run on propane or natural gas, require no manual intervention, perform weekly automatic tests, and can be monitored remotely via Wi-Fi from your phone.
What generator power do I need for my house?
For essential circuits only (heating, refrigerator, freezer, lighting, water pump, sump pump), a 10 to 14 kW generator is sufficient. To power the entire house, including the stove, dryer, air conditioner, and hot tub, you’ll need 18 to 26 kW, depending on the size of your home. VoltMax analyzes your maximum demand meter (MDW) and calculates the exact power required. Don’t choose a generator that’s too small to save money: an overloaded generator will be damaged and won’t be able to power your appliances properly.
Where should a residential generator be installed?
The generator is installed outside the house, on a solid, level base, at a safe distance from windows, doors, and air intakes (minimum 5 feet) because it produces carbon monoxide. It must also be 18 inches clear of any combustible surface and comply with municipal regulations. In the Outaouais region, it is also ensured that the generator remains accessible for winter maintenance. The transfer switch is installed inside, near the electrical panel. VoltMax assesses each property to determine the optimal location.
Does a Generac generator require a lot of maintenance?
No. Generac generators perform an automatic weekly test to ensure everything is working properly. Regular maintenance consists of changing the oil, filter, and spark plugs annually or every 200 hours of use. Generac offers a 5-year limited warranty covering parts and labor.
Propane or natural gas: which fuel should I choose for my generator?
Natural gas is convenient if your home is already connected (continuous supply, no tank to fill), but the network is limited to urban areas of Gatineau. Propane is the most popular option in the Outaouais region, especially in rural areas (La Pêche, Chelsea, Val-des-Monts, Wakefield) where natural gas is not available. A 420-pound tank is sufficient for 14 to 20 kW models; for 22 kW and above, two tanks are recommended. Propane has an indefinite shelf life, unlike gasoline. VoltMax advises you on the best choice and coordinates the installation with your supplier.
