Underground electrical entrance

Underground electrical entrance: An overlooked option for your property in the Outaouais region

Building a new home in the Outaouais region involves several technical decisions. Among those that often go unnoticed is the choice between an overhead or underground electrical service. Most homeowners opt for overhead by default, simply because it’s what they’re familiar with. However, underground electrical services offer significant advantages that deserve consideration before finalizing construction plans.

What most people don’t know

In Quebec, approximately 97,000 kilometers of overhead distribution lines supply homes. This is the standard, and for good reason: the overhead network is economical to install and easy for Hydro-Québec to maintain. However, it is not the only option available.

An underground electrical connection involves burying the power cable between a pole at the property line and the foundation of the house. The meter and electrical panel are then located inside or on a private pole near the street, rather than on a pole attached to the exterior wall of the residence.

This configuration is gaining popularity in new residential areas and among self-builders who wish to maximize the aesthetics of their property.

The tangible benefits of an underground electrical entrance

The first advantage is visual. No electrical poles on the house’s facade, no visible wires crossing the property. For new construction where every architectural detail counts, this difference can be significant, particularly for high-end properties or those located on wooded lots where integration with the landscape is a priority.

The second advantage concerns reliability. Buried cables are not subjected to the onslaught of ice, wind, or tree branches. In the Outaouais region, where winter storms can wreak havoc on the overhead network for several days, this protection against the elements is a significant advantage. Outages caused by downed wires or damaged poles simply do not affect underground installations.

Third advantage: flexibility in the positioning of the electrical panel. Without the constraint of an external mast, the panel can be installed in the most logical location for the distribution of circuits in the house, whether in the basement, in a mechanical room or near the garage.

Things you need to know before choosing

Underground electrical service is generally more expensive than a traditional overhead connection. The difference varies depending on the distance and ground conditions. However, expect additional costs for excavation, conduit installation, and backfilling. This extra cost can be partially offset by the savings on a temporary electrical service, as the underground connection can often be made as soon as the foundation is poured.

Timing is also crucial. This decision must be made early in the construction process, ideally before the foundations are excavated. Adding an underground entrance afterward involves additional excavation work and significantly higher costs.

For rural or semi-rural properties such as those found in La Pêche or in several sectors of Gatineau, the underground entrance can also facilitate subsequent landscaping by eliminating the constraints related to overhead wires.

A decision that should be planned with a professional

The choice between an overhead and underground power line depends on several factors: the terrain, the distance from the existing network, the available budget, and the homeowner’s aesthetic priorities. A master electrician can assess these elements and present the electrical connection options best suited to each situation.

At VoltMax, private electrical line installation is one of the services offered to owner-builders and homeowners in the Outaouais region. From the initial assessment to coordination with Hydro-Québec, our team supports clients at every stage of the connection process.
